The real estate industry changed after an agent was killed on the job — but safety threats remain

The fatal shooting of a 27-year-old real estate agent in 2011 sparked the industry's response to threats and risks. The Iowa Association of Realtors CEO, Gavin Blair, described the killing as a "worst case scenario" that led to a "safety pledge" of best practices. However, some in the industry argue that not enough has been done to protect agents. A survey conducted two years ago by the nation's largest real estate trade organization revealed that many agents now carry guns or other means of self-protection. The survey also found that nearly a quarter of respondents had experienced a situation that made them fear for their personal safety or the safety of their personal information.
