Walmart is introducing digital price tags to replace paper ones in all stores across the U.S. and plans to roll them out in stores by the end of 2026. The move has been met with concern from lawmakers about surge pricing. Retail consultant Scott Benedict believes that trust in grocery is fragile given shoppers track prices weekly. However, some lawmakers have taken a dim view of DSLs as a gateway to surge pricing, with Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-New Mexico) introducing legislation banning them in any grocery store over 10,000 square feet. Congresswoman Val Hoyle is proposing a ban on DSLs in the House, while there is no reported use of digital shelf pricing yet.
