Theo Baker, a former student journalist at Stanford University, is set to graduate this spring with a book deal and a George Polk Award for his investigative reporting. The book, How to Rule the World: An Education in Power at Stanford, was excerpted in The Atlantic. It offers a front-row account of the romanticized institution, where students are given significant amounts of pre-idea funding and mentorship. However, it also highlights the internalized pressure of Silicon Valley for Stanford students to launch a startup, raise money, and become rich. This pressure has been internalized, with many now expecting to be rich. Baker's friend, D, dropped out of Stanford a few years ago to start a startup and is now considered a success story.
