The trend of "no gifts" has gone too far in the direction of overconsumption, with some arguing that it removes the joy of children receiving birthday gifts. The argument is valid for financial reasons, but the focus is on the importance of preserving the joy and value of giving for children. For example, a study involving children ages 3–17 found that children derive significantly more happiness from material gifts than from experiences. The joy of giving presents increases empathy and the brain may enjoy giving more than receiving. However, the trend of avoiding gifts at all once a year is a mistake, as birthday presents are special occasions.
