Wyoming state lawmakers have faced backlash after introducing a measure to ban nuclear waste storage unless approved by a vote of the people. The proposal was introduced by the Freedom Caucus, an ultra-conservative branch of the Republican Party. However, it did not receive enough votes to move it up in the legislature. The opposition, led by nuclear advocate Rep. Lloyd Larsen, called the decision "very problematic for the future and for the businesses of Wyoming." The state had previously banned all waste storage, but made an exception in 2022 for "temporary storage" so long as it comes from a Wyoming-based power plant. The debate over the proposal has led to a rift within the Republican party, with Governor Mark Gordon joining other party members in opposing the ban.
