Iran's giant South Pars gas field at the centre of Gulf war escalation
Published on March 19, 2026.
Iran's South Pars gas field has been targeted by Israel amid the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict. The reservoir contains an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet of usable gas, enough to supply the world's needs for 13 years. Statistics from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries show Iran's total proven natural gas reserves at 34 trillion cubic meters. South Pars is Iran's largest gas producer and the third-largest after the United States and Russia. It has been developed in phases around the Iranian port city of Asaluyeh and accounts for between 70% and 75% of the country's total gas production. More than 90% of Iran's production is consumed domestically, with domestic gas production exceeding peak demand in summer.
