Joseph Martinez, a man who murdered a 13-year-old girl in 1999, has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for sexually abusing and strangling her. The case had gone cold until 2021, when new forensic testing led to Martinez. This is the first case in New York City to be solved by using familial DNA. The victim's loved ones expressed their devastation in court. Prosecutors claim Martinez thought his appearance as "Jupiter Joe" could prevent him from coming to court.
