American and Southwest airlines, two of the largest airlines in the United States, have increased their checked baggage fees by $10 for most flights. Starting May 18, passengers will pay more to check bags if they fly on a basic economy ticket. The fee increases were implemented as part of a larger trend of major U.S. airlines increasing fees due to the Iran war and high jet fuel prices affecting business costs. American Airlines charges $50 for the first checked bag and $60 for the second checked bag for domestic travel and most international destinations in the Americas, except Cuba and Haiti. Southwest increased its baggage fees to $45 and $55, up $10 from when the airline introduced baggage fees in May 2025. Passengers booking the Basic, Choice or Choice Preferred fares can now check up to two bags free.
