She described being held down during Edward's birth as an "obstetric violence" that could have resulted in a death toll of three to four times more deaths in childbirth. Despite planning an "all-natural, home birth, water birth," Ali ended up having an emergency C-section. Her son Edward remained in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit after being delivered and couldn't pee for a long time due to the traumatic nature of his birth. The actress also highlighted the discrimination black women face during pregnancy, childbirth, and medical treatment.
