Austin weighs ICE policy ahead of state funding deadline

Austin officials have been given until Thursday to confirm they will not restrict cooperation between city police and ICE, or risk losing $2.5 million in public safety grants. The threat was issued by Gov. Greg Abbott's office, which also extended to Dallas and Houston. This comes amid concerns about the power of local elected officials to influence city policy regarding immigration cooperation with federal immigration authorities like ICE. The city was awarded roughly $3.6 million in grants in fiscal year 2026. If the grants are terminated, the city will be required to repay the entire amount. The Austin Police Department recently updated new rules for when and how officers call ICE if someone they detain has a noncriminal immigration warrant.
