As government funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) remains frozen in Congress, airports are running food drives and accepting donations for security screeners who are enduring their second consecutive six-month period without pay. Many TSA workers are still paying off debts and are six days away from missing a second full paycheck. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has offered to pay the salaries of these workers. The TSA's parent agency, DHS, has been unable to prevent a sharp increase in absences from screeners, who earn an average of $61,000 annually. So far, 366 TSA officers have resigned their jobs since the shutdown began. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) has alerted its members to food drives, free pantries, and emergency food pantries.
