Kurt Freudenberg, now 23, started gambling at age 11, when he traded cosmetic upgrades for digital currency used to bet on gambling sites. By high school, he had expanded into sports betting on NBA and NFL games and offshore casinos that only accepted cryptocurrency. His parents were unaware of his gambling addiction until he went to college, where he spent 15 hours a day gambling. The explosion of online gambling has made it easier for kids to bet without parental permission. Online sportsbooks like FanDuel and DraftKings are regulated by states as gambling companies and must follow state age minimums. Despite these issues, there are many work-arounds for underage bettors, with older siblings and friends often setting up accounts for them or acting as bookies.
