The Lafayette City Council has taken up the issue of food truck sales, which has been a topic for months due to complaints from brick-and-mortar businesses who claim that the trucks diminish lunch crowds and erode profit margins. Restaurants have reported losses ranging from 10 percent to 60 percent during peak food truck hours. The issue arose after complaints from restaurants established on the same turf as the trucks chose to occupy. The dispute centers on state and local law allowing cities to impose public safety regulations on mobile vendors, but limits these rules. Food truck advocates have sued California cities for unfair or unlawful restrictions, which led to a costly legal battle in Monrovia. The city is now considering regulating food trucks.
