Hitting home: Cold winter, not Iran war, surges your JEA bill

JEA customers are experiencing the highest electric bills in three years due to a spike in natural gas costs from winter storms. The fuel charge portion of a typical residential bill is set to increase by nearly $10 in April. Current JEA bills are higher than those for FPL customers in Northeast Florida for comparable energy use. The utility has been passing on the cost of natural gas to its customers. The highest fuel charge for a typical JEA residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours was in September 2022 at $83.46. The total JEA electric bill this month for a residential customer in Duval County, using a kilowart hours is $159.79 including taxes and fees, $49.73 is the fuel cost.
