Nocturnal storms: Why it’s much more dangerous when storms come at night

Nocturnal tornadoes are nearly twice as deadly as daytime tornadoes, and people are less likely to receive warnings overnight. This makes it harder for them to spot storm hazards in the dark. The best place for emergency services is to prepare for night storms, with outdoor sirens not being used to alert people outside. If a warning is issued at 2 a.m., head for the basement or an interior room immediately.
