The White House and U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy have announced a new initiative, "Pathways to Safer Streets," aimed at reversing a surge in roadway fatalities. The multi-point plan involves a significant shift in the federal government's approach to traffic safety, focusing on enforcement, data, and trauma response. The initiative includes eight “pathways” to safer streets, several of which target repeat and high-risk offenders. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is leading a "comprehensive, data-driven roadmap" targeting the most persistent and deadly behaviors on America’s roads. NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison emphasized the increased federal support for state and local police agencies, expanding partnerships, and new initiatives designed to deploy “high-visibility, targeted enforcement”.
