Paul Lake's short novel, Cry Wolf: A Political Fable, was considered the best book ever written on American immigration, but was largely ignored by the literary mainstream and disappeared without a trace. Despite being compared favorably by contemporary reviewers to Orwell's Animal Farm, the novel was ignored by mainstream reviews and disappeared largely without trace. While its dark and disturbing work was praised as a powerful work, it was out of step with the times when it was published in 2008, which was seen as a contrast to the current trend of pro-amnesty “conservatism” of George W. Bush and the acceptance of multiculturalism by Barack Obama. Despite Lake's own knowledge of the book, he was not widely recognized or well-known due to his teaching at Arkansas Tech. The author's appreciation for the book was appreciated after he retired a few years prior and two faculty members claimed ignorance upon his departure.
