A report by app intelligence provider Appfigures has found that image model releases are driving growth for AI mobile apps, generating 6.5 times more downloads than traditional updates. This shift from earlier models driving demand for conversational experiences to new features like a voice chat interface. For example, Google's Gemini launched its image model Nano Banana, which increased its downloads by over four times over the same period. Meanwhile, ChatGPT added over 12 million incremental installs after introducing its GPT-4o image model in March of last year, which was 4.5x more downloads. However, the report cautioned that additional downloads don't necessarily translate into increased mobile revenue.
