The plan to stabilize Cahoon Memorial Park's shoreline and expand public access to Lake Erie is moving closer to construction in Bay Village, Ohio, but a funding gap remains. Consultant Jason T. Stangland, waterfront practice director at SmithGroup, said the city has all the necessary state and federal approvals and is waiting for the governor's signature on the last piece of the project. The project will address two key issues: severe erosion along the Lake Erie shoreline, improving public access and stabilizing Cahoon Park land. Improvements include regrading the bluff, building an ADA-accessible path to the shoreline on the shore, restoring a beach consisting of 1.6 acres of sand in one area and 2.25 acres of cobble (stones) in another. The design includes stone breakwaters to reduce wave energy and prevent erosion. However, the city still faces a funding shortfall of about $5 million. The city is applying for additional funds from various federal, state and county sources.
