Shishmaref's girls basketball team defeated Hoonah 62-37 in the first round of the Alaska State 1A Girls Basketball Tournament. The victory was an upset due to Hounah's position as the No. 6 seed. The team's first half was trailing 24-22, but they turned the game around with a 20-point run in the third quarter. Kyra Weyanna and Elizabeth Kokeok, Loretta Sinnok and Katesonja Fernandez each scored at least six points in the second half. This is the first time the Northern Lights have played in the state tournament and is their first year with the team. The rest of the early games were fairly lopsided.
