The head of the Hartford Police Union, Lt. James Rutkauski, defended Officer Joseph Magnano's decision to fatally shoot Steven Jones, stating that Jones was in a mental health crisis and was not aware of the taser's failure. Jones died four days later. The Inspector General will determine if Magnano was right to shoot Jones, who was holding a knife and was shot nine times in the chest. The union's leader, Rutkauskki, criticized Mayor Arunan Arulampalam's response to two police shootings within eight days. He also called for better tools and support to prevent future tragedies.
