Elizabeth Taylor won her first Academy Award for her role in the film Butterfield 8, which she disliked. The film adaptation of author John O'Hara's 1935 novel was released in 1960 and became the biggest title of the year for MGM, earning $9 million domestically and earning her best actress Oscar. Despite rewrites, Taylor remained unhappy with her character and dialogue. A memorable scene involved Taylor’s character writing “no sale” on a mirror in lipstick after believing she was mistaken for a sex worker.
