The River District in west Charlotte, a 1,400-acre area that has been largely overlooked, is set to become a popular destination. The master developer, Crescent Communities, is planning to build a corporate campus, hotel, shopping centers, and a riverfront park. The River District's first phase is "Westrow," which will include 129 single-family homes, 318 market-rate apartments, and 87 mixed-income units. The next phase will include a 28,000-square-foot retail building housing mostly local shops. Crescent Communities is also in talks with potential hotel brands and office tenants about filling a planned corporate campus with three-to-four-story buildings. The development has also attracted interest from European companies looking to establish a U.S. location.
