The South African Weather Service (SAWS) confirmed that Western Cape stations have recorded their highest March temperatures in over a decade, surpassing records set during the extreme heat event of 3 March 2015. Alexander Bay, near the Orange River, saw a peak of 45°C, while places like Cape Town, Kirstenbosch and Worcester all experienced record highs of 42°C. Relief is expected as the high-pressure system driving the extreme temperatures is weakening and moving away from the region. Despite this, residents are urged to take precautions, including drinking plenty of water and not leaving children or animals in parked vehicles. The city is not currently in a drought, but the window to avoid potential water restrictions later this year is narrowing.
