The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) has approved major changes to its football playoff system, including a new regional seeding model for 11-player football playoffs, a new transfer monitoring system, and a formal study of how schools are classified for competition. The changes were made during the MHSAA Representative Council's spring meeting in Gaylord. The most significant change involves the elimination of early rounds of the best-vs.-best matchup for the regional championship. The council also approved the use of a “Transfer Tracker” system to monitor student-athlete movement between schools and streamline eligibility verification. The study group will study school demographics, championship data across all levels of tournaments, and other success factors. Other changes approved include a suspension for games with a goal differential of more than 30 points, a reduced-player overtime procedure for field hockey, and new rules for inclement weather.
