The city has implemented the technology, which uses machine learning to identify vehicles with specific plate numbers, makes, and models for law enforcement. Some residents were concerned about the cameras' use in their communities, stating that they could use artificial intelligence to track every detail of vehicles passing them. However, a spokesperson from the Provo PD stated that the department only uses these cameras for active criminal investigations, locating wanted criminals, finding missing persons, or recovering stolen vehicles. The company behind the cameras stated that it is not in the business of selling data.
