Stimulant use has surged post-pandemic, particularly among young adult women, according to Trilliant Health. The study found a 94% increase in stimulant prescriptions for commercially insured women ages 18-44 between 2018 and 2024. The analysis also revealed a change in who prescribes the drugs, with primary care providers accounting for 39% of prescriptions in 2018 and 24% by 2024. This increase in demand has led to a years-long stimulant shortage. The rise of telehealth platforms offering prescriptions for such medications has been criticized as a failed attempt to reach underserved populations. However, this trend may have unintended consequences, as evidenced by two executives convicted of illegally distributing Adderall over the internet.
