The companies USA Happy Baby and Star Baby Care offered to transport pregnant women from China to the US to give birth to children recognized as U.S. citizens before returning home. However, these claims are disputed by experts who estimate that 1.5 million babies were born to tourists over a 15-year period. Critics argue that these figures are exaggerated and that laws are already in place to combat birth tourism. The 14th amendment states that all persons born or naturalized in the United States are citizens of the US and the State where they reside.
