The Pittsburgh Penguins lost 1-0 to the Philadelphia Flyers in the first-round of the season, ending one of the greatest eras in franchise history for the Penguins. The team's fortunes began to improve when Sidney Crosby joined the team as a rookie in 2005-06, followed by Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang. Since then, the Penguins have won 903 regular-season games and won three Stanley Cup championships under these stars. However, the team's age began to show, with six of the top seven scorers in the postseason being 31 or older. General manager Kyle Dubas has been building a modern core through the draft, with Marc-Andre Fleury, Malkin, and Crosby as top-two picks. If the Penguins are to return to Stanley Cup contender status, they need to embrace the future.
