Jonathan Spalletta, known as "Cthulhon" and "Jspalletta," is accused of carrying out a $53 million exploit that led to the collapse of Uranium Finance, a decentralized exchange. The indictment was unsealed by U.S. authorities and includes computer fraud and money laundering charges related to two 2021 attacks on the exchange. Experts suggest this case reflects a shift in court's view of whether smart contract exploits can be treated as lawful. Spallettan allegedly returned most of the stolen funds after negotiating with the platform, but kept about $386,000 under a sham “bug bounty” arrangement.
