U.S. copper miner Freeport-McMoRan is preparing to obtain an environmental permit for its $7.5 billion expansion of its El Abra copper mine in Chile. The project is a joint venture between the company and state-owned copper giant Codelco and involves the construction of a concentrator and a desalination plant.
