Interfaith leaders gathered at St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Albuquerque to call for unity and peace following an assault against a priest who supported a proposed mosque. The Rev. Vincent Chavéz, a priest at St., was allegedly threatened with a gun by the boyfriend of a mosque opponent, the boyfriend, and a church groundskeeper on July 22. Interfaith leaders from groups including the Albuquerque Islamic Center, Congregation Nahalat Shalom and the Quaker-founded American Friends Service Committee also gathered to defend Muslims' right to worship. The Archbishop of Santa Fe, John Wester, has received calls from him to remove Chávez from his position as a religious leader. The Council on American Islamic Relations also expressed support for Cháavez and appreciated law enforcement taking the alleged threat seriously.
