Santianti Ventura Morales was wrongfully convicted of murdering Ramiro Lopez Fidel in 1986, but his conviction was later overturned after new eyewitness testimony debunked the case. Despite his wrongful conviction being publicly recognized in 1991, it was until 35 years later that he received any compensation for the five years he spent in prison. The compensation and new certificate of innocence were made possible by newly enacted legislation in Oregon.
