Apple's sci-fi show, For All Mankind Season 5, has moved forward to 2012 with a new season featuring a revolution brewing on Mars. Showrunners Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi are aware that the show is no longer about alternative history, as there have been humans on Mars for over 20 years and their alternate history has changed significantly. The show's main inspiration was the American colonies' evolution from being founded by England. The main conflict in Season 5 is the people living on Mars no longer want to be regulated by Earth. To make this storyline feel realistic, Wolpert says they had to look further into the past for inspiration. The series is set in an alternate 1969 and will end at the end of Season 6.
