Waymo's rapidly expanding robotaxi service network relies heavily on public-funded first responders, including firefighters and police, to assist in the rescue of stuck robotaxis during emergencies. The company's remote assistance team was called to help with a fire near Redwood City, California, in August, despite efforts from the company’s remote assistance staff. This incident was not an isolated incident, with at least six instances where first responders had to take control of Waymo vehicles and move them out of traffic during emergency situations. The firm has been criticized by lawmakers for its use of remote assistance employees, including a few dozen from the Philippines, to help its robotaxis navigate complex situations. Despite this criticism, Waymo has declined to specify how many roadside assistance workers it uses or how it plans to scale this team as it expands its service network.
