Students say fears of ICE ramp up weighed heavily on their mental health, impacted academics

As President Donald Trump increased immigration enforcement, students and educators in the Pacific Northwest say it negatively impacted students' mental health and school work. Students of color, particularly Latino students, were fearful of being taken in an immigration raid. Athena Jimenez, a Washington-based educator who works with teachers in several states, saw an increase in anxiety and self harm and a decrease in attendance. In Portland's David Douglas School District, students began to display anxiety rooted in worries about immigration, even in the early grades. Some students reported stomachaches and headaches caused by worry, which was harmful to both their academic and social development. Additionally, families were reluctant to attend school events and enrollment in the district’s online programs increased due to their comfort at home.
