Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) has captured a rare image of the red-tailed phascogales, a species that once thrived in the mallee woodlands of New South Wales, Australia. For over a century, local animal researchers failed to locate any such creatures. The sightings were the result of years of hard work by AWC researchers, who began releasing the animals into predator-free areas within Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary and Mallee Cliffs National Park a decade ago. Despite their small size and distinctive tail, they are notoriously difficult to detect after release. The team set up 47 motion-sensor cameras across three survey zones to capture these rare images.
