California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been criticised by the US gas industry for attempting to "flex" on President Donald Trump over gas prices, despite presiding over the country's highest per-gallon prices. The criticism came in response to the US-Israel airstrikes on Iran, which killed both Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The US Oil & Gas Association criticised Newsom for his mismanagement of California's natural resources, stating that 63% of the state's crude oil imports comes from foreign countries. The proposal for a new mileage tax could cost California drivers an extra $228 to $1,026 a year, and there are fears that the airstrikes onIran could increase gas prices in California.
