COVID tax refunds are under appeal. You should file anyway, experts say

The U.S. government is appealing a federal court decision that allows millions of Americans to potentially claim COVID-related refunds. The decision was made in Kwong v. United States, which allows for the temporary postponement of applicable tax deadlines for a disaster period plus 60 days. Taxpayers must file a claim by July 10 to preserve their refund if the ruling is affirmed. To determine eligibility, taxpayers can check their tax records to see if the IRS levied any penalties or interest during the tax filing pause. Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins recommends that taxpayers with obligations related to income, employment, estate, gift, and excise taxes should be informed.
