Florida lawmakers have approved a bill that allows Gov. Ron DeSantis to remove local officials who support Pride events or activities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The bill, known as HB 1001 / SB 1134, was opposed by five Republicans and could intimidate local governments that recognize or support LGBTQ+ residents. Critics argue that it is among the most aggressive state laws targeting diversity programs and could chill local governments from supporting Pride events. It also includes a powerful enforcement mechanism for the governor to suspend elected officials for “misfeasance in office” under Florida’s constitution. If approved by the governor, the bill would take effect in January 2027.
