A group of parents and students has filed a federal lawsuit against the New Richmond School District in the Western District of Wisconsin alleging that the district's policy allows transgender students to use bathrooms matching their gender identity infringes on their privacy and safety. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin. The group, New Richmond Parents for Strong Schools, claims the policy violates Title IX, a federal civil rights law banning sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs. They are asking the court to permanently stop the district from enforcing its current policy and to require students' use of bathrooms based on biological sex. The issue has caused controversy in New Richmond, a community of about 11,000 residents located 35 miles east of the Twin Cities.
