The Friends of Holywell Dene, a team of volunteers who have been maintaining the Northumberland woodland for 25 years, has seen its transformation. The group was formed in 2000 to restore the woodland after years of cattle grazing and lack of land management led to its deterioration. The chair of the Friends, Chris Wood, stated that the woodland has now been transformed with "well maintained paths" for walkers and nature enthusiasts. The volunteers have recently completed work to install steps, repair broken fences, and remove hundreds of metres of barbed wire. The dene has over 4,000 followers on Facebook and over 100 formal members who pay a small fee for updates on the work.
