William Lawrence, a self-described socialist candidate and co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, won the Democratic nomination in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, defeating two moderate rivals in one of the state's most closely watched House primaries. Lawrence, who campaigned as an outsider, led the three-way contest with 43% of the vote, followed by Bridget Brink and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam. His victory marks a leftward shift for Democrats in a district that has traditionally favored centrist candidates. He will now face GOP incumbent Tom Barrett on Nov. 3 in a crucial race to determine which party will control the House.
