Rio Tinto has received up to $13.9 million from Canada for a gallium metal project. This follows a $7 million commitment from the Government of Québec in December 2024. The company plans to use gallium from its existing refining process to strengthen the North American supply chain for the essential ingredient for gallium, a critical mineral used in everything from high-performance radars to smartphones and semiconductors. The pilot plant in Saguenay, Canada, is expected to be operational in 2027.
