NASA's Hubble Space Telescope captured images of comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS) breaking apart in real time, over a few days in November. The timing of this observation was unusual as scientists rarely catch a comet at the exact moment it begins to break apart. The images also revealed new insights into how comets break apart, delaying their bright flare-up by one to three days after separating, leading researchers to reevaluate previous assumptions about how quickly exposed ice should react to solar heat. The fragments are now spread out across the solar system about 250 million miles from Earth, making their discovery extraordinary.
