The Alaska Senate has unanimously advanced a bill that would clarify state regulators' authority to oversee pricing for imported natural gas. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission oversees the construction and location of gas import facilities. The bill would allow the Regulatory Commission of Alaska to ensure utilities pay "just and reasonable rates" for energy. This has led to concerns about potential increases in utility bills due to a shortage of Cook Inlet gas and the potential for higher demand. The lead sponsor of the bill, Sen. Cathy Giessel, stated that the bill would guarantee the lowest power and heating bills for ratepayers. It is now being considered by the Alaska House of Representatives.
