A near-miss collision between United Airlines Flight 589 and a Sikorsky Black Hawk U.S. Army helicopter occurred on the final approach to John Wayne Airport. The incident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Commission (FAA). The new policy suspends the use of "visual separation" between airplanes and helicopters in busy areas, and requires air traffic controllers to use radar to prevent aircrafts from colliding. No injuries were reported. This close encounter comes after an Air Canada plane crashed into LaGuardia Airport, killing two pilots and injuring dozens.
