North Carolina company Plantd is raising funds to scale up production of carbon-negative building material, made with its own crop of fast-growing grasses. The company is aiming to take over the entire lumber industry, which is currently the largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally, according to the United Nations Environment Programme. Most progress in reducing construction emissions has been achieved by reducing heating, cooling and lighting costs. Plantd's panels are made with compressed cuttings of fast growing grasses, which the company clones at its headquarters in Oxford, North Carolina. The materials are stronger and less susceptible to moisture, and have been used in a multiyear deal with D.R. Horton to purchase 10 million Plantd panels, enough to build 90,000 homes.
