Baby Your Baby- Prevent Accidental Window Falls with 4-Inch Rule
Published on March 23, 2026.
The 4-inch rule of opening windows to prevent accidental window falls has been advised by Intermountain Children’s Health experts. Each year in the US, between 15 and 20 children under the age of 11 die and nearly 15,000 are injured due to falls from windows. These falls occur more frequently in large urban areas and children living in multi-unit buildings have the highest number of incidents. The hospital is offering free visual reminders for windows to remind people of the rule. Other ways to prevent these falls include keeping children's play away from windows and setting rules about safety.
