Pakistani farmers are suing two German companies, RWE and Heidelberg Materials, for the 2022 floods that left 30 million people displaced, killed over 1,700, inundated millions of acres of farmlands, and destroyed or damaged more than a million homes. The farmers claim their emissions exacerbated the floods and destroyed farmlands. The companies were chosen for being among the three largest emitters of carbon dioxide in Germany, responsible for 70 percent of global carbon emissions. The case is set to be heard in a German court, which dismissed a previous lawsuit by RWE in 2025, but also ruled that companies can be held liable for specific climate-related harms caused by their carbon emissions, making Germany climate litigation a priority.
